Letter to City Council Concerning DMV Bus Access

In April, the Dubuque City Council accepted a proposal to cut the Key West bus service—and in particular, by implication, access to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). At our April 30 meeting, the members of the Dubuque Democratic Socialists unanimously approved a resolution condemning the decision of the Council and demanding that they ensure affordable access to the DMV. As we stated in the letter,

Access to the DMV is critically important for citizens, particularly in light of the fact that the State of Iowa will be implementing a new voter identification system, which will require that voters present a photo ID. We anticipate that lack of affordable and ready access to the DMV will result in further disenfranchised of low-income voters and frustrate the efforts of those seeking to enhance civic engagement.
